Historically, the innovation in portal space is driven by the need to access unified customizable information through multiple channels. This has seen the portal space to slowly transition from Desktop phase to Web Applications to Enterprise Portals. Though Enterprise Portals such as Oracle Portal were very powerful, they lacked the rich user experience offered by the Desktop environment. To bridge this gap, Oracle introduced Webcenter, the Enterprise Portal powered by Web 2.0.
